Overview
The Berkshire Community Dental Service (CDS) faces increasing demand due to rising decay rates among children, an aging population, and more patients with complex needs. Current clinics are fully utilized, creating long waiting lists and compliance risks. To address this, an additional dental surgery at St Marks Hospital is proposed, along with upgrades to existing facilities.
Project Objectives
- Provide an additional dental surgery at St Marks Hospital.
- Upgrade cabinetry and lighting in both surgeries.
- Install a mechanical ventilation system compliant with HTM standards.
- Improve accessibility for bariatric and wheelchair patients.
- Ensure compliance with HTM01-05 and new NHS dental contract specifications.
- Infection Control & Water compliance adherence into the design.
- Dental X-ray setting design with patient & staff safety measures.
- Upgraded Graphic luminaires suitable for neurodiverse groups.
- Upgrade of outdated cabinetry in the current surgery into medical grade cabinetry.
- Construction of a new surgery with full patient facilities.
- Installation of bariatric dental chair and wheelchair tipper.
- HTM-compliant ventilation and decontamination solutions.
Design Approach
- Align refurbishment with Health Building Notes (HBN) and HTM guidelines.
- Incorporate expert advice from dental equipment specialists and M&E consultants.
- Ensure environmental sustainability and improved staff/patient wellbeing.
- Phase-wise construction plan with stakeholder consultations and weekly progress meetings.

- Project Cost is £361,674.68
- Capital funding from the Trust.
