Overview

CAMHS Maple, a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services unit, has undergone a significant transformation to better support the needs of young patients and staff. Located at the rear of 25 Erleigh Road, the facility occupies a standalone structure that was originally built as a classroom. Through a carefully planned extension and refurbishment, the building has been repurposed into a welcoming and functional space tailored to the delivery of CAMHS services.

Project objectives

The primary goal of the redevelopment was to create a therapeutic environment that enhances the patient experience while supporting the wellbeing of clinical staff. The design brief focused on accessibility, comfort, and a sense of calm, with domestic-style interiors chosen to reduce clinical anxiety and promote a homely atmosphere.

Key features

The redesigned CAMHS Maple facility now includes:

  • Two private consultation rooms for confidential patient assessments and therapy sessions.
  • A comfortable waiting area designed to reduce stress and provide a welcoming first impression.
  • Access to a kitchenette, offering convenience for staff and families during longer visits.
  • An accessible toilet, ensuring the space meets the needs of all visitors.
  • A dedicated outdoor space, providing opportunities for therapeutic activities and fresh air breaks.

Design approach

The interior design prioritised a domestic aesthetic, with soft furnishings, warm lighting, and natural materials used throughout. This approach was informed by evidence suggesting that non-clinical environments can positively impact mental health outcomes, particularly for children and adolescents.

Funding and support

The redevelopment was made possible through funding from NHS England, as part of the Urgent and Emergency Care Programme. This investment reflects a broader commitment to improving mental health infrastructure and ensuring that services are delivered in environments conducive to recovery and wellbeing.

Impact

Since reopening, CAMHS Maple has received positive feedback from both service users and staff. The improved layout and calming design have contributed to a more supportive atmosphere, helping young people feel safe and valued during their care journey.
